This Building was erected in 1879, as a private residence for the late James W. Dunnett, who was born in Scotland, settled in Belleville, and became a prosperous merchant on Front Street. He was Mayor of the City of Belleville from 1884 - 1885.
The Victorian style of architecture was popular at the time, and of particular interest is the winding staircase (see overview) which ascends to the third floor of the building. Several of the rooms have massive fireplaces made of imported marble.
John R. Bush purchased the property in 1952, and after extensive renovations and additions, of the chapel and garage areas, it was opened as a funeral home in 1956.
The John R. Bush Funeral Home had it's beginning as The Belleville Burial Company, established in 1914, by the late Joseph Imlaw.
The funeral home was purchased by Douglas Rushnell in 1974, and continues to operate as a family business, serving the community for over a century. Below, is a very old picture of the main building when it was a private residence.
We understand that it is not always possible to pay respects in person, & hope that this small token will help.
